Maybe not quite so safer any more / 1st peg is worthless and most are now pretty corroded. Gear is not easy to find unless you can come to terms with using the bolts! I'd say it was pretty much the same as the direct but then might just be getting soft. Do you find this valuable?

I'd agree with Dai. Anyway the 1st peg's no longer there - one gentle tap and it crumbled away. Tried to replace it with another peg but couldn't remove the rusted stump. Its possible to place a small wire next to the remains of the peg.
Electrification of Soviet Union also made use of the peg.
