As a climbing destination Gogarth has a relatively short short but colourful history, including many of the UK's greatest climbers from the 1960's onwards.

Before that though members of RAF Valley Mountain Rescue Team used to frequent the sunny haven of Holyhead Mountain, which although offering great climbing missmisses the obvious challenge of Gogarth. That had to wait until April 4th 1964 when Baz Ingle and Martin Boysen scrambled down to the Main Cliff and worked theretheir way up the fine line of Gogarth. It must have felt like walking into climbingsclimbing's veriousversion of Utopia, towering white cliffs cut with corners and grooves.

This line was the spark that set the flame of Gogarth alight, as the mainstream climber of sixties were starting to run out of options in Snowdonia for development. It was the Alpha Club that started the development, and it is a testimenttestament to the early pioneers that many of the earlytheir routes climbed in the area are still classics today.
