Before that though members of RAF Valley Mountain Rescue Team used to frequent the sunny haven of Holyhead Mountain, which although offering great climbing misses the obvious challenge of Gogarth. That had to wait until April 4th 1964 when Baz Ingle and Martin Boysen scrambled down to the Main Cliff and worked their way up the fine line of Gogarth. It must have felt like walking into climbing's version of Utopia, towering white cliffs cut with corners and grooves.

This line was the spark that set the flame of Gogarth alight, as the mainstream climber of sixties were starting to run out of options in Snowdonia for development. It was the Alpha Club that started the development, and it is a testament to the early pioneers that many of their routes are still classics today.
